how does you having to go thru a background check affect you in any way?
An invasion of privacy, an unnecessary expense to pay for the dealer's fee, and the bill would have made it a felony for people to even borrow guns from each other while hunting.

Americans understand the basic principle of cost vs. benefit. Conservatives, in particular, are keenly aware that the cost to society in terms of Constitutional degradation far outweighs that of a few lives saved (the benefit). Liberals, on the other hand, simply don't care. It's an emotional thing to them. The Constitution is of no matter.

I'm sure people who are planning to kill people will obey a law that requires they go to a gun dealer and run a background check before acquiring a stolen gun.
