The rejection of science is possibly the single most dangerous thing we can do as a country. It stunts our growth and prosperity on every level. It's time to grow up and listen to non-biased experts in their field.

Why choose to be ignorant?

but Maher repeatedly explained how sound science is not up for debate and that Moore should “have the humility” to defer to actual scientific experts on the issue.
Sound science? As opposed to verified and validated science? Do you know the difference between a "sound" argument and that of a "validated" one?

One contains logical elements that "appear" to be plausible. The other has established itself by actual evidence of result.

So... when did "science" establish plausibility over that of evidential process of verification, validation, and replication? Maher is an idiot, plain and simple.

Think about it a moment. He argues that "plausibility" and "appeal to authority" establish that no further debate be continued. Maher needs to "have humility" in the fact that he is a blithering moron who needs to go back to wherever he obtained his education and head slap those who "educated" him to such a stupid standard.

If we followed Maher's standard, we would still be obtaining our "scientific" knowledge from that of the church.

Seriously, the guy must labor to breathe to make such stupid comments.

Climate change is normal. It's been happening for millions of years and will happen for millions more. If the climate never changed, that would be abnormal.

Saddam Hussein did not not cause the 9/11 attacks. However, he did fund, support and gave safe haven to terrorists. One example is Abdul Rahman Yassin. He helped make the bomb used in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. He was hiding out in Iraq, was living in an apartment paid by the Iraqi government and was getting a weekly salary.

Bigfoot? Not sure about that. Have read quite a bit about that guy, though.

Ignorance is an inherent element of conservatism.

As William F. Buckley said, "A conservative is a fellow who is standing athwart history yelling 'Stop!'".

Knowledge leads to progress.

The classic example: what is evolutionary biology? Knowledge. Knowledge that portends changes in how we live because we have more knowledge to inform our choices. And change is anathema to conservatism. The essence of conservative is not changing. Knowledge is a threat to the status quo.

There's a reason conservatives tend to loathe those who teach and the places where teaching occurs. Such people and such things make it very difficult for conservatives to nurture the ignorance they value in their children.

And that is why conservatives hold ignorance as a virtue.

I think it's very unfair to claim that conservatives are ignorant and stupid, as opposed to stupid people who vote for or otherwise support conservative politicians. In this country and abroad, conservatism has a substantial and serious intellectual tradition behind it.

Now, the nauseating mix of libertarianism, bastardized classical liberalism, class war and naked self-interest which goes by the name of conservative in this country now - that's an entirely different matter. That is simply a conspiracy of the rich and the stupid.

This thread and the other one on liberal ignorance demonstrates the said state America is currently in. I used find some of this silliness funny, but not anymore. Many of you are behaving exactly the way the people who want this country to implode want you to. Do you realize this? It's all about divide and conquer, and it's working like a charm.
