He thinks we don't need the Voting Rights act anymore because there are districts that are "all black by law" That's exactly why we DO need the Voting Rights act. The reason those districts are "all black by law" is because the Republicans rig it by putting all the black people in one district, which means one Representative.

Damn him for believing that people should be treated equally under the law regardless of skin color. Democrats hate that kind of crap.

It looks like the rightwing has decided to deal with changing demographics by changing voting rights. And by “changing” I mean “eliminating.” The world the rightwing envisions will have the old white aristocracy still running things no matter how much they are outnumbered by non-whites. I think the technical term for that is “South Africa, 1982.” The Justices are looking for excuses to strike down the Voting Rights Act—besides the fact that it guarantees voting rights. They can’t say that reason out loud, although Antonin Scalia comes pretty close.

The VRA is what makes the districts gerrymandered, you realize that right?

Good Lord! I'm astounded that such a well educated man could be so foolish!

You cannot erase 400 years of institutional racism in only 50. Jim Crow would creep back with a vengeance if these Civil Rights bills were gutted.

Especially when you do everything you can possibly do to make sure it doesn't go away.

Why do you think that is?
I highly doubt any type of voter could ever again be disenfranchised like the 50's and 60's.

Oh, it most certainly would creep back. Barbarism and oppression are never more than a generation away, and people must be vigilant to protect the freedoms they fought so hard for. And the Civil Rights struggle was incredibly difficult. To throw that out the window would be beyond tragic.

I do not believe that things have changed enough in the South (or anywhere in the U.S., for that matter) to warrant gutting the Voting Rights Act. In fact, I don't think things will ever change enough to warrant gutting it. There will always be racism in the United States, and there will always be large segments of the population who will seek to oppress their fellow citizens.
