Burger was largely a product of the era when the Second Amendment was ignored by legal scholars. But in the last decades of the 20th century there was a lot more scholarship done in this area, and some people like Sanford Levinson and Laurence Tribe became converts to the individual right model. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/06/us...pagewanted=all

I believe in reasonable gun regulation, but thank god Burger didn't have his way. Every person has the right to defend their life and property. I certainly believe in an individual right to own a gun to protect your self and family. I also happen to believe the govt has the right to regulate dangerous and unusual weapons.
