Gas tax revenue down, officials eye mileage levy - Yahoo! News

Boy! Don't that make you feel free!? Taxed on how far you drive and they can tell because soon ALL new cars will have tracking devices....boy oh boy...this land of the free thing is hilarious! Sure glad I am to damn broke to afford a new car...I drive a 2001 suburban and if that pos has a tracking device on it its coming off.

Sounds like a great idea. The most libertarian of all taxation methods is use taxes. There are many places in the country with tolls where the distance is contingent on mileage.

As long as there is no GPS tracking, I see 0 problem with it.

There is gps tracking in all cars that are new that's how they figure out how much to steal from you.

So, with no GPS tracking, what are you proposing exactly? Have toll collection baskets at every intersection? Every mile you have to swipe a card at a machine to proceed through? No thanks, I'd rather have my publicly funded roadways that feature no obstruction to my travel

That's not stealing. You are using public roads; you are incurring economic value by using those roads, hence you have to pay the piper.

Maybe more people will start using public transportation or walking....maybe they will tax them for that to.

. How about during your annual inspection, you record how many miles you drove that year based on your mileage tracker. Seems simple enough.

I don't need a government to steal from me to make sure I have roads...private company can pave a road....then I can pay them directly for paving it

This makes sense. It's basically a use/consumption tax put on roads.

However the use of a tracking/gps system is unnecessary. They can just go off of the mileage counter inside the car.
