Obama is claiming to want to "tax the rich" yet the fiscal cliff bill just passed has $70 billion of pork loopholes for the rich.

the rich should just shut their business and watch what happens, every major store just stop employing folks, rich stop purchasing, investing, and hiring. that seem to be what the people want. i have never worked for a poor person, it is those who make money who hire. i dont care if it is a billionare that hires me, if he pays me for my work then that is good for me.

As long as our Glorious Leader and his people don't listen to Thom Hartmann there is a chance that some of our people will never pay their "fair share". Hartmann says that anybody should be able to live on $1 billion so therefore he thinks we can do a lot toward getting rid of our $16 trillion debt. How? He says that we could just take everything they have stashed away over $1 billion from them and distribute that among the people in taking care of the general welfare of all.

I did some googling and found that we do have 425 billionaires in the US. Bill Gates has about $66 billion but the average of all 425 is very near $4 billion. If you figure all that out I think you may see us gaining $1416 billion to redistribute. The problem then would be that they couldn't get back to those numbers for the next year of money grabbing.

We will be safe till Obama, Pelosi, and Reid learn about all that money sitting around unspent. What happens when they see these numbers?

Typical liberal argument. And intentionally "missing the point".

Yes, the poor pay "other" taxes. So do the so-called rich.

So if they both pay "other" taxes, and the poor pay NO income tax, they are not contributing to the general welfare to the extent that the so-called rich are.

That argument makes no sense. It's as if liberals think only the poor pay "other" taxes.

How much more should the rich pay? Why should we be punishing them for being successful? You would think success would be something to aspire to not to punish.
During the Reagan presidency the top tax rate was 90%. None of these tax increases push the top tax rate anywhere near that level. Perhaps some people should just grow a backbone.

Brackets are in place because people with more resources have a higher ability to contribute. Be it in total taxes or higher rates. To keep our society moving a progressive tax policy allows for the government to collect more from those who can afford it for the greater good. This is the system used in most developed societies.

Everyone should pay a flat rate on all discretionary income.

Because the Bush Tax Cuts (TM) were tax cuts for parents, and because the top 1% (or top 10%) have fewer kids on average than the bottom 99% (or bottom 90%). Also, the middle class enjoys greater proportional benefit from tax breaks than does the top 1% (or top 10%) partly because of stealth taxation on the rich which takes away many deductions at incomes over $100K or so.

The working class pays higher state and local tax rates than the middle class and the rich. They also pay steep regulatory taxes not imposed on the middle class. A childless burger flipper working full time at minimum wage pays over $500 a year in federal income tax and over $1,000 in payroll taxes. How much would you like burger flippers to pay?
