I knew they could do it. We will no longer go over the so-called "Fiscal Cliff". The House passed a bill on Wednesday extending the tax cuts, and sent it to the Senate for their approval and President Obama's signature.

Now it's up to the Senate, and of course to President Obama. The House has done its part.

With a reasonable effort, the Senate can debate this bill, bring it to the Senate floor, and pass it, all between now and the end of the year. They still have 11 days from today, Dec. 20, 2012.

The Senate had no trouble convening and passing Obamacare in a midnight vote on Christmas Eve Day, 2010. So I don't see why they would have a problem doing the same with this one.

Particularly since this bill, unlike Obamacare, is something the American people actually support.

Finally, we will no longer have to listen to Democrat whines that the House has done nothing, it's all the House's fault that we're going over this cliff, etc. etc.

The House has now DONE its part. It's now up to the Senate, whether they will come to an agreement, or wether the Senate Democrats will send us over the "fiscal cliff".

The House has passed a workable bill. The Senate has still passed nothing, though they have had months.

The ball is in your court, Senate. Don't let the American people down.

House votes to extend tax cuts at all income levels - Washington Post

House votes to extend tax cuts at all income levels

By Rosalind S. Helderman and Lori Montgomery
August 01, 2012

The Republican-led House voted Wednesday to extend an array of expiring tax cuts for households at all income levels through 2013, a pre-election statement of unyielding opposition to higher taxes for any American.

The 256 to 171 vote to preserve tax cuts enacted during the George W. Bush administration fell largely along party lines. It came after the House rejected a Democratic alternative, on a similarly partisan 257 to 170 vote, that would have allowed the cuts to expire on taxable income over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples filing jointly.

P.S. Note the date of the article.

This will not pass the Senate nor will Obama sign it. Obama won the election, he calls the shots. The House, for the sake of the country, should pass a bill allowing the tax cuts to expire on those making above $250,000/year. Obama will have it no other way and we will go over the fiscal cliff (hello Dow 6,000 and unemployment 15%). Republicans are screwed either way. They will get the blame if the country goes over the cliff, and they will also be blamed in 2014 for agreeing to tax increases. We are moving ever closer to a one-party state.

The House has wasted time trying to push through a bill that President Obama said SPECIFICALLY that he would veto if it ever came across his desk. He has said multiple times he will NOT support a bill that allows more tax cuts for people earning over $250,000 per year. He's even began to compromise with republicans and raised the bar to $400,000 a year for families, republicans ignored this and still are trying to push through a bill that they KNOW will fail.

Agreed.

Obama raised the threshold from $250,000 to people earning over $400,000 and the Reps still weren't happy. Obama won't play ball.
The Reps should have compromised on this one.

That's their choice.

The House, for the sake of the country, did even better than that. They passed a bill preventing the expiration altogether.

You have made it clear that that's due to the Senate's choice, and Obama's choice.

Only from people so foolish as to believe it's Republicans' fault the Democrats insisted on the tax cuts expiring (as they did when the cuts were first enacted by George Bush), that it's Republicans' fault that the Democrats are now holding the entire country hostage for an increase in taxes that will slow down the economy, and it's Republicans' fault that President Obama is a willing accomplice to that hostage-holding.

(patiently)

See the OP. The Republicans agreed to PREVENT the tax increases. That's what the bill they passed, does.

You just told me it was the **Democrats** who are insisting on taxes going up.

You seem to be a very confused individual. Please try to make up your mind.

I'll say it as simple as I know how...the republicans have wasted the American People's time with this bill knowing full well that the Senate will NOT pass it, and Obama would veto it if it ever reached his desk.

IF you call today a success for the GOP, then, well, I don't know what reality you're living in. Today, the GOP basically ceded all the leverage to the Democrats.

I agree that the reps should compromise but $400,000 is an insult. The dems should at least be reasonable and come back with $1mm.
