I figure there's got to be some reasoning behind this claim. Does anyone have an idea of when we didn't have a "spending problem" in this country? What years/administrations/eras would you consider a time when we had our spending under control?

Yes we do have a spending problem, we are spending too much on our defense budget, but god forbid we ever cut that spending back. The Cons just want to see that spending go up even higher.

We are also spending too much on welfare bennys. We can start by cutting this ladies food stamps back. She is fat and is obviously gets too many food stamps. She looks healthy enough to work too.

And cut off the obamaphones, the election is over.

We don't have a spending problem if we raise taxes higher than what we are spending.
So tax the rich and then tax them some more. Just keep taxing them until we have a surplus.

We could confiscate 100 percent of what "the rich" own, not just earn every year, and it wouldn't scratch the surface of what our government spends.

We need to slash spending on all programs (including defense and entitlements) and balance a budget for once. I don't trust either party to actually do so. Both have shown a great willingness to spend the taxpayer's money to buy votes.

It's not an either/or thing. We don't have a spending problem, we don't have a revenue problem. We have a problem with a disparity between spending and revenue. And any solution involves resolving that disparity. The most rational approach to the problem is to address the disparity from both ends. Find ways to increase revenue, and find ways to reduce spending, all at the same time.

Here we go with the defense mantra again.

All departments are overspending.

There isn't enough wealth to do that. We need to cut spending. As for the OP's question, it has been a long time since we haven't had a spending problem. Since WWII, every new dollar of revenue has been met with an average of $1.17 in spending.
