More than likely the "compound" was a residence compound that was probably abandoned during the revolution. When there are multiple buildings - villas - generally there is the main house for the head of family and extended family will live in another house, then there is a majlis - a common area for family or gatherings. There may also be a small one room structure for servants. It is not unusual for a residential compound to have a wall built around it and no "security" is installed by residents, unless the resident was with the former govt or military, which would still be very minimal. As far as I can tell the only upgrade in security they did was to extend the wall be about 3 feet up and put up barbed wire. As for all other "security" measures installed, that security was new. The installation didn't even give them the minimum security based on standards, and that includes human security. A window without bars is not security. Add the bars and then it becomes secure.

Sorry bob, but all we needed to do was answer the phone:
Around 9:40 p.m.:

Agents hear loud noises, gunfire and explosions near the front gate. A barracks at the entrance housing the local militiamen is burnt down. Agents viewing cameras see large groups of armed men flowing into the compound. Alarm is sounded. Telephone calls are made to the embassy in Tripoli, officials in Washington, the Libyan authorities and a U.S. quick reaction force located at a second compound a little over a mile away.
The very first information we got was a phone call to Washington, reporting "gunfire and explosions near the front gate" and "large groups of armed men flowing into the compound." that was the first communication, the FACTS that were learned. Washington did not get a call about a mad Muslim movie mob.

Right there, in the phone calls made to the embassy and Washington was our actionable intelligence, explosions, gunfire, and armed men flowing into the consulate. Obama did not need to scratch his wooden head, and send the FBI to know what happened, he just needs to replay the phone call from the consulate, I'm sure they record those.

Yemen: Masked Gunmen Reportedly Kill U.S. Embassy Employee In Sanaa

isn't it time to REVISIT the security procedures at our embassies and pull out if we can't implement them adequately?

will more americans have to die?

Well the Libyan President and several other countries knew by that weekend that it was a planned terrorist attack. But the US held off because our FBI couldn't get there to investigate ?
CNN got there OK and found the Ambassador's journal.
