From early childhood most people are conditioned to listen to authority when they try to figure out what is right and what is wrong instead of listening to their own hearts, their own conscience and their own moral values.

The problem is not those in power, the problem is right between your ears."

Worshiping the government? Like any of us does that.

Another paranoid straw man put up by the right wingers.

I do not worship the government.

I believe the government is too heavily influenced by the powerful and wealthy corporations that are interested only in their profits and increasing the luxury, riches and fortunes of their executives.

Now, I agree with the bolded.

The funny thing about the antigovernment rants is that they presuppose that if the government is somehow shrunken, the dominant corporations will somehow support broader freedoms. Their sole goal is aggregating wealth and the power to aggregate future wealth. It is the height of naivete to believe they will not try perpetually to take over the government, so that they can consolidate their power. To the degree that the government is a tool of the people to balance corporate power, it is worthy of respect and our collective investment. Right wingers here think that if we trash the government, the world will be a better place. Buffoonery.

I am all for a thoughtful, Simpson-Bowles view of how to balance the budget, along with shrinking the military and home owners agreeing to give up their mortgage interest deduction.

Gee, and that's what I thought "Good Old American Family Values™" were all about.

If I had only known that what was really being said was that we should learn to think independently, question the American Exceptionalist meme, question religion and to ultimately do one's "own thing" no matter what society thought instead of all this time thinking that instead it was par to some sort of liberal/commie/socialist/secular humanist concept to destroy America! The things you learn on C-D!

Fine, but do you think in the fantasy world that is libertarianism, powerful forces will not arise to affect your freedoms? We are already well down a road to where the wealthy have access to just about everything in greater share than anyone else. They will not use their leverage and power to grab your slice of pizza?

Are we not the United States after all? Being part of the strongest country in the world requires a degree of collective concern, sacrifice, and a recognition that we need institutions to maintain it. libertarian anarchy is a nice fantasy and all, but please...
