I have heard many times a boney person call themselves fat.. some people get obsessed with it.. it is a mental sickness with a bad image of themselves.. I have also seen some heavier people happy and content with themselves. More power to them.
We got be healthy not all the same weight... can't make a saint bernard look like a pomeranian. They are both beautiful.
I would err on the side of caution/kindness. I refer to guys as "big" and to ladies - I just don't say anything descriptive. "For hell hath no fury . . . . "
Curvaceous , voluptuous , Rubenesque .... these are all excellent words and very few women would/should mind!
Libs seem to love calling people fat when they don't like them. Case in point, Rush Limbaugh. Hence I think this particular invective is going to be spared ever being expunged due to political correctness.

I'll bet that the Lib's are sure glad that George Carlin died .. er .. a .. Passed On ..
As part of my morning bathroom mirror pep talk "fat" is commonly used.
"Hey fatso getting a little plump around the middle, lay off the beer for awhile"
I believe political correctness has contributed a great deal to America's widening waist line.
Calling oneself fat is VERY different from calling somebody else fat... if you don't believe me, try it out on the next large lady you see. Just don't cry when you get clocked!
I don't think it should be considered a dirty word or anything, but it's also not about being politically correct - it's just a simple matter of respect, and in my entire lifetime (35 years) that has never been a nice/acceptable thing to call somebody. So you can't blame it on today's PC culture, as this word has been a mean one since forever. Unless you're as old as Moses, I doubt you can argue it was okay when you were a kid either.
For the record, I used to be very overweight, and would frequently call myself fat (still do sometimes). Even now when I refer to those days, I'll say "back when I was fat" as opposed to using euphemisms. But again, there's a huge difference between self-deprecation and insulting another person. Haven't you heard the expression "I can call my momma a b****, but if you call her one I'll kick your butt?" Yeah, that applies to this word too IMO.
