Don't know about sinister, but would definitely say it's anti-democratic. Some people hate democracy, some people love it.

Property owner who pays taxes, worker that pays taxes, or part of a household where the primary breadwinner is a taxpayer and you are one of his/her dependents.

The FairTax would take care of that. Everyone has to pay. I also favor allowing every citizen (not aliens, legal or illegal) a vote no matter if they are a felon, etc.

Only liberals would be offended by it, so say it as much as you want.

It's not really about "fair". The fact is that taxpaying is only a small part of good citizenship, and tax spending only a small part of good governance.

Whose definition of "contributing" are we going to use?

Contribute what? I understand the thought but I think the practice would be a disaster. Nothing like taking away the rights of a person to forever keep that person in your control.

Having said that; I am disgusted with the way Obama is trying to buy votes with handouts. That is not good for this country. We should all be encouraged to stand on our own two feet and learn to live on what we earn. That is what has made America great.

Every day I see hard working people struggling to pay taxes so others can do nothing. The people struggling should not be the people working hard. It was that way for us when Carter was the president. Carter had a good heart for caring but the freeloaders took advantage of him and us.

On the flip side, people who don't pay taxes voting themselves other people's money is a significant problem in present day America, and more theoretically is a ticking time-bomb in any given democracy - if that population reaches over half the electorate society will crater, hard.

edit: I am not advocating revoking peoples' right to vote; making sure that everyone pays a little in + making entitlements universal rather than strictly means-tested is a much better way to solve the problem.
