The only reason why this bad news seems to surge is because of greater access to news media. Imagine what the news would look like/what people would think if we had this news technology during the days of the black plague when 1/3 of europes population was wiped out.

Yup, I saw an article recently that made a reasonable case that statistically this is the safest time to be alive in history. I should go see if I can find it...
