Not according to Jacob Appelbaum. Watch this video to witness his amazing story for your self.

"We Don't Live in a Free Country": Jacob Appelbaum on Being Target of Mass Govt Surveillance - YouTube

Yeah, I know, it's hard to believe this is happening in the US.

I don't listen to these videos, but for the question: Some of the statements made by many posters on city-data lead me to believe people no longer know what it is to be free and have freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

I think freedom stopped when someone who owns their own business, makes money on their own, is not connected to anything else, but pays taxes to a government who has the ability to tell that person how they have to choose their employees. Something went wrong there.

Now watch those people who do not understand real freedom attack what I just said. I was born into the freedom of everyone taking care of themselves or relying upon the love of their neighbors to help them.

I think our present government steals from us by charging taxes. Our government was never intended to be Robin Hood.

I think what we have become is a "free for all" country and it is bankrupting us.

If one feels we are not free as we use to be. One can take a trip to Iran or Syria, speak out about the Governement and how you feel. And find out for yourself, what not having Freedom is all aobut, if you live to tell about it.

This was never as "free" if a country as some people seem to nostalgically think it was. But it's still pretty good, relatively speaking. There isn't much that I want to do that I'm not able to do here.

Depends on what you mean by free is suppose.

We aren't free to view what we want, or do what we want, or even say what we want anymore. We don't have a free market, because not only do federal regulations hinder private enterprise, but so do state and local zoning laws.

You don't own your house or land. Quit paying taxes and see how quickly you are evicted.

Now, we do enjoy some things other countries don't, mainly unimpeded travel. But that's really about it.

If I wanted to distill my own liquor, or grow a plant for personal use, or decide I want to watch a violent movie at 7 on broadcast TV, I can't legally.

I've also been hearing about the "Stop and Frisk" initiative that's been going on in NYC. GTFOH. I can't believe more people aren't outraged.

As a black man, I can barely drive certain places without getting pulled over. Now they can harass me when I'm walking??
