Try your example in trying for a mortgage.

I can see it now, "Hello Mr. Banker, I only make $50,000 a year now so I want to borrow a million. I expect to get a raise every year from now until the 30 year mortgage is paid off.

Banker, " How do you know you will get those raises?"

You, "Well I got them in the past".
