This is Barack pandering for votes. He has no intention of allowing this to proceed beyond the planning phase.
I largely agree with this statement. I'm sure construction of the station won't be as easy as it's made out to be. Making a grand statment and actually following through are two different things. I'm cautiously optimistic that the President won't be swayed, but we'll see.
Red states and predominately red neighborhoods should be out bidding for more of these plants and waste storage areas to be in their vicinity.
But for some reason, they don't.
I know you are just axe grinding but that's a pretty ignorant post.
1. Nuclear plants are expensive and due to pesky things like the physics of power transfer generally need to be located in more populous areas. There are also geologic considerations as well as water source issues.
3. The whole red state vs. blue state thing is stupid. For example, all of the nuclear power plants in IL are in the more rural republican areas but 1/2 the population is in the Chicago area which uses a lot of that power.....but hey, IL is a "blue state" right?

I personally support Pres. Obama on this move.
If i'm just axe grinding, then why are you trying to get personal with me?
And Al Melvin knows damn well that no nuclear waste is going anywhere near the 26th district, so where exactly does he want it stored? On the corner of Oracle and Ina? Yea, right. How about under the La Encantada Mall? That sounds like a nice place. Personally, i'd stick it right next door to CDO High. That way, the wonderful Republican residents of his district can see the trucks coming in and out.

I wasn't being personal,
"red staters are nuclear power hypocrites" with nothing to back it up is a painfully weak thesis on multiple levels.
I know you are smarter than that hence why I attributed it to ranting and not reason and logic. That doesn't mean I'm not going to debunk it though.

Debunk what?
The guys on the right are chewing everyone's ear off about the need for more nuke power plants.
I'd like to see more of them offer up their districts as places to build the plants and store the waste. Plenty of urban districts fall under the Red color which solves the problem of needing to be near populous areas.
Until i see that, i'm not convinced. It's that simple. Of course i'm being overly simplistic, but i still believe what i believe.

I think many have stated that they will offer up their districts just after those fighting to close Gitmo agree to house the prisoners in their districts.
The not in my back yard game is played by both sides.
Regardless, if this does happen, it's a good thing.

If Obama is serious about nuclear power he will open up Yuca Mountain for nuclear reactor waste storage.
I won't hold my breath...
