Geez this is a library.
And no library I've worked in allowed bathing... as I mentioned on the other thread, we actually had a 10-minute limit (on our single-occupancy bathroom) at my old library, just to keep the homeless patrons from bathing in there. Got one complaint from a man with intestinal issues, but otherwise most people understood the rule! Homeless folks are totally welcome to come in, hang out all day if they want to, provided they're following all of our guidelines for use - as it goes for any member of the public who enters.

Actually there kind of is, at least in the Library Bill of Rights... we call it the "digital divide," which means people who lack the means to buy a computer & Internet (or smartphone) will be disadvantaged without public access. These days Internet is no longer a "luxury," especially considering how many jobs & schools REQUIRE online application submissions. And could you imagine somebody turning in a hand-written resume or school essay? So to take away public computers from the libraries would be devastating, and could actually make the poor even poorer. Does that make sense?

Not to mention, we'd lose about half of our patronage & most of our funding without them! I guess those of you who think libraries are irrelevant wouldn't care, but our 30,000+ card holders (just from my branch) would probably be rather miffed.

You're right ... it is NOT okay. Watching porn in the public library is not appropriate behavior. I have nothing against viewing porn. Do in the privacy of your own home and j-rk off all you want, that's fine with me.

On the other hand I do confess that when my buddies and I reached puberty - many, many years ago - we would head to the library to seek out medical books that showed the human body, or anthropology books with pictures of scantily clad natives, or art books with nudes in them! But we were afraid of the stern-looking old spinster lady librarian and never had the guts to check one of those books out ... so we peeked at them furtively in the aisles!

Nice thought, and personally I agree... but as somebody already said above, this is more about free access and (lack of) censorship than anything. We are not legally allowed to filter public computers, so there is no way to keep people from doing what they want - but we can request they stop viewing objectionable material, if another patron files a legitimate complaint. We can also require they use a screen "privacy filter," or set aside a few computers that aren't easily viewed by passersby. It's not a common occurrence anyway, so generally we just deal with each situation as it comes up individually.

FYI, there is no library in the country where actual "self-pleasuring" is allowed... that's where it becomes a criminal act, and one would be promptly arrested and/or removed for exposing themselves. Look at whatever you want, but removing clothes and/or touching yourself is NEVER tolerated in public places.

LOL. I'm not a "spinster old lady," but anyone's welcome to check out art & anthropology books in my library - and I won't even give you a judgmental look for it! Some kids also like Clan of the Cave Bear or Tropic of Cancer, if they're more into reading (as opposed to viewing) the dirty stuff.

I'm going to be a meanie here and side with social conservatives on this one. Censorship to at least the degree of blocking porn sites. Memory serves me right carnal knowledge is best understood privately, and particularly at age appropriate times. Computers with age filters are great, but if this mans activity is in public, it's public, and it's also overriding the point of age filters.

Public behavior does have to modify itself for the sake of kids and grandma. Use your inside voice when you're inside. The question I'd pose to lawmakers is... Why is common courtesy against the law?

Everything is acceptable these days .I don't see why internet porn should not be one of them .When you consider the taxpayers ,pay for a library. These are the days when so called * gays have rights*,pride days of blacks and *gays*.I see no problem with this so called issue either .

Edwardian that's downright bizarre. Annihilating the existence of gays will not change the fact that junior will still grow up and sexually mature. There is no mutual exclusion going on. There is licencious public behavior that's applicable to all. Even gay kids, who would be equally embarrassed by a leacherous old hetero man out of control with himself.

I had the displeasure of having to wade through a ton of research and statistics about beastiality. Yuck. You know it's bad when just reading makes you feel like you need a shower to scrape it off you. Some of these websites are beyond the pale 'selling' it that I really think it best we have similar policies to England. It's one thing to talk about a subject so you're empowered to defend yourself when you see it coming down the pike, but it's another thing entirely when it's preying.

This is a no brainer, they should have internet blocks on anyhting like porn sites. If anyone is caught viewing it, they should be banned.
