Lights don't eliminate crime. Total nonsense. People come out here, move to the country, and demand street lighting because they're afraid of the dark. These random lights in the middle of nowhere are silly. Carry your own light (flashlight or lantern) if you want one.
Who want's pavement? Gravel roads help keep the urban trash out.
I used to live along a hilly road that turned into a raging rapid during torrential downpours. There was absolutely no way that you could drive up the hill without a real 4x4.
Some people decided that residents on the hill who lived close to the rapids ought to fix the problem. People along the road refused.
Sheesh; I've never understood why people desire to move to rural areas then demand they be turned into paved parking lots with a light pole every 100 yards.
Nature is what you were looking for wasn't it?
Cities with high crime have far more things than street lighting to blame for that problem. Reducing the street lighting and snow ploughing would be my first budget reductions. You can't learn to drive in the snow then move south. We drove in the snow for years before needing specialized tires and a street ploughed every hour.
People should pay out of pocket to illuminate their own property.
That's what rural folks do when they want security lighting.
The electric co. installs and the charge is anywhere from $10-20 per month.
Dusk to dawn lighting on a pole.
Hey..these folks can always ask their electric company to install a security light.
It's just that they will have to pay the bill each month and not have that light for "free" like they used to.
