It says the owner didn't want to rent to a single woman and child because this house was DEEP off the beaten path, woman has no way to get out if she gets snowed in, no four wheeled drive.
The owner is worried that the person would be unsafe, how is that a problem?

As a person living in the sticks I can tell you the women could have BIG problems.
How will she plow the driveway???
With a child there is also the concern that emergency services can not get into a home with snow bocking the way.
To be honest I could not live where I do with plows and four wheel drive trucks.
I believe the single mom should sue.
Why can't a single woman plow snow?
Why does she need a man to help with snow removal?
I see women shoveling snow all the time in Jersey, what's the big deal?
Some women are physically stronger than men.
Lastly, how the landlord have known or not if the woman was going to buy a tractor or suv?
She ASSumed too many things, the landlord deserves what's coming to her.
I can understand the landlord's concern. It was done with her and her baby's safety in mind, but women do not need a man to take care of things for them. Mostly, men are a pain in arse and more trouble than what the company is worth. And lazy when it comes to working around the house. If I need something done, I do it. If I don't know how, or don't have the time, I'll hire help.
She could buy a snow blower, and if she is use to living in that environment she would be fine. Hell, my sister lived on the rez in Montana, and trust me, being on the reservation is NOT like being in the burbs. Even in Montana. Drive 90 miles to the big grocery store; no 4 wheel drives back in those days; no garage (you dig your car out of the snow); wood burning stove was the only heat; and no indoor bathroom or hot water (the first year she was there) and keep the shovel on the inside of the house or you're screwed.
Granted, she wasn't alone, but she shoveled her share of snow and chopped her share of wood. People underestimate women. And they overestimate men.

I think you may need to re-read the article. Deep in the woods, treacherous driveway, up to 45 inches. No four wheel drive vehicle, nearest neighbor, 1½ miles. Even for a healthy strong male, by themselves with a child, that could be trouble, if your gonna be that isolated, you need two adults, be they women or men. Additionally, a four wheel drive vehicle is probably required to live in a place that far off the beaten path.

I'm sure that's what the landlord was afraid of in the first place, in our lawsuit happy society, this woman would have eagerly sued her for renting to her in the first place if anything happened, or if she couldn't handle the work it involved.

Women are not helpless little children that need taking care of...they're adults and have equal rights to live wherever they choose.
To discriminate based on sex is against the law, the landlord broke the law.
Who are you or anyone else (including the landlord) to determine what another person can do????
Maybe she, like I, could afford to hire someone to plow the driveway...YOU don't know that.
And just how safe are women who live alone in cities ???
Not very...
how safe are women who live with men who beat them?
