My parents are very intelligent people. They both went to school long before the Department of Education was around.

How is this? I thought the only way one could become educated is if the Federal government allowed it.

Thoughts?

I think the point is that the government made education more accessible to a larger group of people and it has paid of as there are more graduates for HS and College today then there were 60 years ago (as mentioned in the previous thread).

I'm not sure I see what you're driving at with the whole "if the federal government allowed it" part, and honestly I don't really feel like guessing at it. Feel free to explain a little more what you mean.

That's all you have? It's an honest question. There are those from both schools of thought on this. Just wondering how they got such a great education if the Feds weren't involved.

FYI my mother went to an inner city school in San Antonio and grew up in poverty.

Not a fail. Just a topic that progressives find uncomfortable, so they wish to stifle discussion of it.

Taboo. Taboo. Boogalooga boo!!

Seriously, that`s what happens when one substitutes groupthink for unfettered, open enquiry -- which used to be called a liberal education, before the education establishment sold itself to a political party in return for job security and the enshrinement of incompetence.

Why exactly is it stupid WestCobb? Are you the thread police? Do you set standards as to what is and what isn't stupid, acceptable, interesting, whatever else you want to say? Go home and be a family man.

Not so sure about what you've said. Last I heard progressives hate EVERYTHING. Uncomfortable isn't a word that completely describes the Progressives, HATE on the other hand completely fills that quota.

Look at the quality today. Kids graduate with little math or science skills. If more people are taught more crap, is it more better?

Plus, the DOE was created around 30 years ago...

Show your parents your post and they might ask the question in reverse.

Seriously, who claims that "the only way one could become educated is if the Federal government allowed it"?

I guess as we get closer to Fall, the straw men will be coming out in force.
