Health Damage and Cover-up
When a German court ordered Monsanto to make public a controversial 90-day rat study on June 20, 2005, the data upheld claims by prominent scientists who said that animals fed the genetically modified (GM) corn developed extensive health effects in the blood, kidneys and liver and that humans eating the corn might be at risk. The 1,139 page research paper on Monsanto’s “Mon 863” variety also revealed that European regulators accepted the company’s assurances that their corn is safe, in spite of the unscientific and contradictory rationale that was used to dismiss significant problems
French Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini, a molecular endocrinologist at the University of Caen, agrees that the results indicate a toxic reaction. Seralini is a member of two French government commissions that evaluate GM food, one of which originally rejected a request for approval of the corn variety in October, 2003 due to the adverse findings of the study. Seralini won a French lawsuit allowing him to express his concerns in public, and now Greenpeace has won a German court battle that makes public the data that is the source of his concerns.

Monsanto: Dangers of Genetically Modified Corn
Germany has now become the sixth country in the European Union to take a stand against GM corn — a wise move that unfortunately the United States has yet to do.
Whereas close to 9,000 acres slated to be planted with MON 810 corn in Germany will now be GM-free (assuming the ban stands up in court if necessary), the acres to be planted with GM corn in the U.S. is in the tens of millions.
German Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner announced she was banning not only the cultivation of GM corn but also the sale of its seeds, saying she had “legitimate reasons to believe that MON 810 posed a danger to the environment.”

The Toxic Dangers of GMO Foods
Most GMO foods have been banned in European countries since 1998, and other countries around the world are following suit. Since the first GMO tomato in 1994, GMO foods have become entrenched in U.S. agriculture and the food supply. The U.S. government partners with the huge agricultural and chemical corporation, Monsanto, in ownership of some of the plant engineering technology.
Resistance
Rape, or canola, plants were modified with genes that give them resistance to certain pesticides, so farmers can spray the fields and the rape plants will be unaffected by the spray. The genes can cross-pollinate with certain weeds in the fields, which subsequently will contain the modified gene and will become resistant to the spray. Greater resistance means that the farmers will need to use increased strengths or entirely new formulations of toxic spray for effective pest control.
