Both presidents showed to their respective parties how to spend, spend, spend. FDR did so to get this nation out of the economic toilet and a war against very able foes. Reagan to end the Cold War once and for all.
Neither showed how to scale back spending after goals were met (although FDR died before he had a chance to).
Scholars were predicting the demise of the Soviet union before Reagan was elected. Soviet Union was unable to sustain itself. Their little war in Afghanistan sure didn't help them. It would have collapsed, with our without Reagan.

Maybe so, but a stated goal of the Reagan administration was to vanquish the Soviet Union and end the Cold War. Whether his military spending increases forced the Soviets to match it; thereby bankrupting them is questionable. But I'll give the credit to his administration.
