Actually... you're kind of on target there. But probably not in the way you think.
Islam actually did begin as a cult, by both the neutral sociological and pejorative modern uses of the term. But what is fascinating is that it started as a Christian cult.
I think you know exactly what you think about it, and you decided to start a thread to elaborate on those thoughts (without ever doing any research to begin with outside of blogs that already agree with you).
That's the sociological definition. The common usage is more pejorative.
But early Islam actually fits both.
Modern Islam doesn't seem to fit as the colloquial version of the word 'cult.' Maybe the way Saudis practice is cultish, but in America, the Muslims I know don't seem more 'cultish,' than other religious Americans.
