So, why did they reject the bipartisan proposal to cut 2 trillion a month ago? Did it have too many of their favorite spending projects in it?

Default GOP - Will propose $2.5 trillion in cuts over 10 years

Those who say where are the solutions from the GOP - here they come.

House GOP conservatives set to unveil $2.5 trillion in deep spending cuts

“Spending Reduction Act” would eliminate such things as the U.S. Agency for International Development and its $1.39 billion annual budget, the $445 million annual subsidy for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the $1.5 billion annual subsidy for Amtrak, $2.5 billion in high speed rail grants, the $150 million subsidy for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and it would cut in half to $7.5 billion the federal travel budget.

But the program eliminations and reductions would account for only $330 billion of the $2.5 trillion in cuts. The bulk of the cuts would come from returning non-defense discretionary spending – which is currently $670 billion out of a $3.8 trillion budget for the 2011 fiscal year – to the 2006 level of $496.7 billion, through 2021.

...

The proposal would cut the federal work force by 15 percent and freeze automatic pay raises for government employees for five years.

Pretty ambitious. But the government has been living high on the hog while more and more people are unemployed. Something has to change.

"non-defense" Uh, huh Why? If the reps are not cutting the military, they are not serious.

Except the policies that would hurt the strongest of lobbies in America... oil, farm, health care related...

Take mass transit for example. It is not something that oil companies are pleased about. They're always at odds with any such development. It is one of the reasons America moved away from further developing railways to building a network of highways instead. Cars burn more fuel than trains do. More fuel... good for business, even if it takes continuously poking nose into international affairs to get more of it.

Military needs to see some cuts as well. Get that number up to an even $3 trillion.

Only remedy to that is to artificially increase gas taxes on the state level to such levels where the price per gallon of gas equals no less than $4.

As far as overall spending goes, they should try to take spending back down to 1980 levels, when the federal budget was a mere $591 billion. We have a serious debt problem, and serious solutions are needed

f you look the military is in lie for cuts already as gates proposed. But then military budget spending has stayed at the 4% level as CBO has said in their reports to congress pretty much since Clinton made his cuts. That is why the have also reported that this budget problems are not going to be helped much by military budget cuts like used in the past.

I didn't even want to talk about seriousness because, like everything else, this is yet another lip service they want to deliver to their electorate. Of course, that they want to cut everything the goes against their ideology just makes it easier.

The government has been living high on the hog with
military spending. Cut it big, and cut it now.

High speed rail is something this country needs and should invest in. Other countries are so far ahead of us on this it's pathetic. We have an aging U.S. transportation infrastructure and we need to join the 21 century. Public investment in infrastructure puts people back to work.

Oh, and I watch PBS
