What are some good public schools within the Pittsburgh Public School District? I've heard that Allderdice is good in regards to High Schools, but are there any other HS's that are viewed as being good? What about lower level schools?

CAPA is also considered quite good, and I am personally excited about the new Science and Technology Academy (even though it is brand new).

I don't have any sort of comprehensive list of good lower schools in mind, but the ones that feed into Allderdice are generally considered good, and there are a bunch of magnet and charter schools.

There's an innovative charter school called City High; however, you don't need to be a city resident to attend charter schools within the city.

Allderdice and Pittsburgh CAPA (Creative & Performing Arts High School) are your best bets when it comes to high schools. Although, you have to audition to get into Pittsburgh CAPA, plus Pittsburgh CAPA is now a 6th through 12th grade school. They closed Roger's CAPA last year, which was the Creative and Performing Art's Middle School. Schenley High School, is 3rd in line behind Allderdice & Pittsburgh CAPA. I personally would not want my child attending any other high school, BUT those 3.

The Pittsburgh Public School district has gone through and is still going through a major overhaul. They've all but closed MOST of their middle schools and made MOST elementary schools K-8.

The elementary school, my daughter, used to attend in Highland Park, Fulton Elementary, was a good school, and must still be a good school. They've survived many cuts and still is a K-5 school. Dilworth, which is in Highland Park, but closer to the Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood, was also considered a very good school, back when my daughter was elementary school aged.

That's the only information I can give you from my experiences.

My daughter, has many friends, whose parents have opted for them to go to charter high schools, instead of a Pittsburgh Public School. One is Career Connections High School, in Lawrenceville, on Butler Street, and the other one is City High School, which is downtown Pittsburgh. I don't know how Career Connections operates, but City High students have the entire months of April, August, and December off...one Spring month, one summer month, and one winter month.

I want to clarify that you mean those three out of the PUBLIC high schools in Pittsburgh. The City High CHARTER high school located downtown is a fantastic school.
