Hello all -

New poster here. Finally bought a house in Lawrenceville after renting in the city since my undergrad days. One question - where the heck can I get decent window bars? I mean these kind:

(what I'm looking for)

I see them everywhere - particularly prominent in the Mexican War streets - nice, black steel or iron bars that are a little bit articulated and generally look pretty nice. Then I search the internet and it's like these things don't even exist. All I can find online are the nasty-looking expandable/adjustable kind. Like so:

(what I'm definitely not looking for but finding everywhere I look)

Can anyone recommend a good place to buy nice looking window bars? I'm not horribly picky about the exact design, but I'd rather not spend a ton of money on them.

Many thanks for any leads.

Dan

Those are probably something you'd have to get custom made. I know there are a few metalworkers in the Lawrenceville/Bloomfield area who could do it, but I don't know the names offhand.

Another place that might be worth checking out is Construction Junction in Point Breeze. It is a salvage place that has just about everything at one time or antother.

Iron Eden on Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield does some beautiful custom work.
There is also a foundry in Millvalle. I think the name is Red Star, but I'm not certain.

Funny out here in CA, you can get security bars at Home Depot.

If you are putting them on all your windows, please consider getting breakaway bars for bedrooms. They have hinges on one side and the other side is activated with an interior pullchain. In a fire, you pull on the chain to relaese the cotter pins and swing the gate out.

Too many people out here have died in fires being trapped by security bars.

I'd be terrified of that. Another death trap is putting glass block windows in the basement.
