I was just downtown last week on TUE and WED around 7pm, and the restaurants were bustling, not just in the cultural district, but everywhere (went to the Capital Grille).
Yes. Restaurants everywhere are booming. People underestimate just how many affluent Millennials there are in this city and how few of we Millennials (affluent or not) actually enjoy cooking. Whenever we meet Downtown after work to dine out the restaurants are hopping.

I'm weird. I would rather use my own toothbrush to clean the urinals in my office building than cook a grilled cheese sandwich at home. We dine out or order in about twice per week.

but check the weather cuz no umbrellas will be allowed in ppg.

if you want, check bus schedules but out buses do not typically go point to point IN town like you can find in NYC, they use a star routing system to bring people in or out as we have only like 2 parking spots in all the town <---Im only slightly kidding.

we do have honest to god taxis. and ubers and lyfts etc

my only after hours experiences in the last 5 years where you will be staying were mostly filming with netflix and that involves large groups and security, outside of that stay out of shadowy areas

Pittsburgh is alive and well after 5pm......everyday. You are obviously not a city slicker. NYC is a huge place and downtown Manhattan gets sleepy after hours. There has been a resurgence since the World Trade redevelopment but downtown Manhattan shuts down earlier than Mid or Uptown. Not to mention no city in the US can compare to NYC.

The city neighborhoods are jumping well into the evening and has been for decades. The 7 day a week hot spots are

Oakland
Shadyside
East Liberty
Garfield
Bloomfield
Larimer
Lawrenceville
The Strip District
Penn / Liberty / Market Square
North Shore / Casino area

Most midsized cities do not have a concentrated cluster of neighborhoods like we do.

You'll be find in the Cultural District and walking to PPG arena. Not a bad walk. There will be plenty of restaurant and bar options downtown for you. Maybe not late night (after 11pm). You'll be fine where you are.

It never fails - someone innocent comes in asking real questions in pitt or pa in general and one of our previously banned trolls who a) does not live here b) has never visited here, chimes in.

for the record, do you know WHY netflix was filming after 5 and not during the day? If you guess that most businesses are closed so traffic and pedestrian traffic that had to be controlled would be gone you would be correct. Fincher (fincher, david, executive co producer with charlize theron) even said so when he defended the permit application. call time for our cars was 6pm and we totally closed most of the streets in the cultural district. no one complained. this does not include production equipment.

and oh yes, I forgot, during the summer of hate and into 2021 I was going down thursdays for jazz nite in the square across from oyster house. a popup occurs there as well and they .... surprise ....close all the streets cuz....most businesses are closed and ..... no one complained.

The businesses were closed during the height of the pandemic. ALL major cities were closed / shuttered during this time. Most business in the square are not closed at 6pm because most of the businesses are restaurants. I am in the square quite often and frequent the Market Square Saturday night market. During this time most businesses are open in the square. You should know this.

Movies are filmed coast to coast. Filming can happen any day at anytime. Not sure of what you getting at but it is most likely BS.

you are talking bars and drinking 'restaurants' (which oddly, most residents are now calling to close - especially in the south side.) and in an area the OP is not going to be near during his trudge, except the square.

we are talking very downtown aka pittsburgh proper, say from the wyndham over to the federal building and along penn/liberty to the bus station - places I am at, quite often - during business hours. after close of business the restaurants nearby only function to serve the high value hotels and show-goers. just ask them. then the plague shut down the shows, the restaurants closed as well and some of them just went back to semi-regular hours THIS YEAR.

you are right I am not a 'city slicker'. And prefer to visit pitt from the water and tie up. But the north shore tie ups are NOT the OPs area of travel. Im also not a drinker.

But since you mentioned manhatten, most businesses (yes, retail) pre-plague were open well past 9, generally 11 on weekends and of course the restaurants bars (of which their mundane theme bars surpass anything we have ever had) are open, pretty much all night if it has booze and music. I think closing time (pre-plague) was 4am. off 7th and 8th ave (where most people never go) they close when everyone passes out. if you say downtown manhatten that closes down, you mean REALLY downtown, like below 20th and into wall street. I have been on the observation deck of the empire after 11 many a time. and of course the village never sleeps. we would stay at the ole ale house until it was time to catch last train (1:20am)

this did not occur during the plague.

well here is the map: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ma...!4d-80.0024186

show us, other than restaurants on weekends, what is open. lets set a reasonable hour of 7pm....

and you keep stating the square IS pittsburgh. it is IN there, it is not representative of the area.

I live on the North Side and work Downtown daily. Downtown isn't back to pre-pandemic levels in terms of foot traffic, but Downtown restaurants and bars are booming because, believe it or not, several thousand people DO live Downtown and DO like to spend their money, too. It still seems like only ~60% of office workers are back Downtown, though. Maybe a little higher percentage of workers are back if you account for businesses that have moved out of Downtown to the Strip or other areas over the past few years.
