He has fired Pittsburgh's public safety director Wendell Hissrich and is looking to hire a black man to replace him.

I know a lot of police officers and firemen in the city and I can tell everyone this; the police and fire department in our city have a very strained relationship. I know this to be fact. It is very interesting that Gainey would consider the head of the fire department for the position, but he is a black man, so that part makes sense. What an interesting dynamic that would be. I don't know if the head of Pittsburgh Fire Department would be interested in such a position as he has a very good position already.

Every public safety director is replaced when a new mayor comes in. You are in the “know”. Sure you are Wendy. How’s the ratings in Altoona?

"After careful and thoughtful consideration, Mayor-Elect Gainey determined that achieving the public safety reforms that the voters elected him to implement would require new leadership in the Public Safety Department."

Which public safety reforms was he elected to implement, exactly?

Here is an interview with him. Honestly, I like quite a bit of what he says. I would like to see officers walking around more and engaging with the community more. I think putting some pressure on UPMC could be good as maybe UPMC will donate or be better in terms of paying some money to help Pittsburgh in general. Here is what he has to say.

Why should “UPMC donate or be better in terms of paying some money to help Pittsburgh in general”?

Ok ya'll.. please read this story IN FULL.
https://www.wpxi.com/news/local/alle...MNR4VVMTPQVGU/

City of Pgh (Zone 5) officer alleges that she was raped by a fellow police officer. County Police and DA's office investigated but no charges were filed. Internal police disciplinary hearing was held, including a hearing with the Fraternal Order of Police. Police Bureau leadership recommended that the accused officer be fired.

Hissrich chose instead to suspend the accused officer for 2-3 days and transfer him out of Zone 5.
The officer who was the victim decided to mic-drop by emailing the ENTIRE Police Bureau about what happened and how the system failed her.

In light of this, I support Gainey's decision to get rid of Hissrich. At first glance without knowing of this incident, Hissrich's firing may appear like good ole racist identity politics.. but on closer inspection, Gainey really may just be taking out the trash.

____

That being said, policing culture is a clown-show. American police want to play like they're on the same level as the military - yet they have NO military discipline or justice. American police do a HORRIBLE job of policing themselves and removing the bad apples from their ranks. The Fraternal Order of Police is the biggest gang in the country and needs to be abolished. Police officers need to be represented by existing public sector unions - who wont be interested in protecting the bad apples. There is too much conflict of interest within the FOP: ”We have investigated ourselves and found that we've done nothing wrong”.

Being accused of something certainly doesn't mean you are guilty of the crime. There could be one heck of a lot more to this than the media's portrayal of it as we all should know by now. Maybe the woman claiming rape wanted a lot more than that one night stand? Not saying it is true or not, I have no idea, you have no idea and WPXI certainly not only could care less if they are accurate, they are in the business to make money, not tell the truth. Sandman is my favorite example of what the mainstream media does to even children waiting for a bus. Scary!

Don't know what happened in that case. No one does except the two involved.

Tony would’ve actually addressed the public safety issues in this city.

This will be a disaster, akin to Creepy Joe’s presidency thus far.
