I was just in mercy hospital for a week, I didn't have a choice because it was unexpected and the only surgeon available was there and I was transferred from St Clair hospital. Mercy is 90% shared rooms, is this the way it is in presby and other upmc hospitals? except for the nursing staff I had the worst experience because of the roomates they stuck in my room.

Shared rooms are the norm at many hospitals when you aren’t in the ICU.

I thought it went out with the 1950's. I don't think shadyside or the new UPMC in Monroeville is this way.

yeah, shadyside has been the go-to for anyone ive visited in a hospital. never a shared room...maybe its a coincidence. do they even have shared rooms? and do you pay more for a priv. room?

could be that mercy is just an older facility, and that shared rooms will be eventually phased out.

what happened with your roommates, GG?

They put a new person every night in my room who was detoxing off alcohol and who suffered an injury. They were using my room as a waiting room until a drug and alcohol bed opened. Then there is me being a light sleeper who hasn't had a drink since high school trying to recover from my surgery having to deal with drunks, it was just agravating.

My insurance won't let me go to St Clair so I will drive to shadyside next time.

I had major surgery at UPMC Presbyterian last year. Private room. However, I was so drugged I probably wouldn't have noticed if I had a roommate.

Note from former R.N. The moment you realize you or a family member is to be admitted, start requesting a private room. Tell your primary nurse, and anyone who is doing the paperwork and then ask to speak to the charge nurse as well. Make everyone aware and if one is available, you have a chance of obtaining it. Most likely there is one available or will be available shortly.

Hope you are feeling well and on the mend, OP.

P.S. And don't forget to observe for hand washing...we want to be reminded if a lapse in this basic procedure occurs.

Hospitals are a bad place to be if you're sick.

I've been in both Passavant and St. Margarets in the last few years and had private rooms both times.
