hi everybody,

My family will be relocating to Pittsburgh in the next few months. Will be working at the University in Oakland. We have been a few times with the hope to get a house. Loved the new development of Summerset at Frick park in Squirrell Hill and are consideringbuying/renting there! Any thoughts or insights? We have a toddler and I know for schools it may have to go for private, although Colfax or minedeo (sp?) might be ok.

Thank to all! BTY We loved Pittsburgh and couldn't be more excited to move there!

Welcome to you!! The only thing I know is that it's awfully pretty looking from the parkway. LOL.

A couple quick thoughts:

First, the whole idea was to create a new development in a central location but incorporating some of the desirable elements of Pittsburgh's traditional East End neighborhoods. If that sounds good to you, then it seems like a nice option. I'd note that personally I prefer Pittsburgh's actual traditional neighborhoods, but that really is just a matter of personal preference. The one thing I would make sure to check out is the quality of the builds--many modern buildings techniques are legitimate improvements on older techniques, but some modern developments cut corners. I have no reason to believe they did that in this development, but it is good standard advice to investigate this issue in new developments.

The other thing is that if it is served by Minadeo or Colfax, then you are arguably in the best line of public schools in the Pittsburgh School District. Some of the suburban school districts are arguably a bit better, but I believe it remains true that many kids go to this line of schools and on into top colleges.

Thank you everybody. I am a bit surprise to know it is not a safe area. Is Squirrell hill in general not safe?

Do not pay attention to 412. He went through and "trolled" many topics last night.

412 is a troll trying to upset people.

Don't worry about it. Squirrel Hill is fine.

As others noted, 412 is a troll.

But to answer your question anyway, the the last I saw, Squirrel Hill is one the safest neighborhoods in the city statistically. And Frick Park is lovely--we live on the other side (Regent Square), and go there all the time with our 2-year-old.

We have friends who recently bought in Summerset and while it's really beautiful, new construction with a nice family vibe, we're really unimpressed with the quality of the construction. If you have a second-floor laundry, the whole house should not shake during the spin cycle. For the price, personally, I would prefer a "real" Squirrel Hill house!

And yes, Sq. Hill is one of the safest areas in the city!

Hildi, they have a townhome with the optional loft and I believe they included a third-floor master suite as another option. It is just beautiful but we really were surprised at the issues they have had. Unfortunately I don't think they'd be available to speak to you about it, they're pretty private about the internet and such!
