I just came across this article published a couple of weeks ago:

Wilkinsburg getting $3 million for renewal plan - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It looks like positive things are ahead for the commercial district of Wilkinsburg. In summary, the article says that they are going to:

* Restore the Train Station

* Demo the Penn Lincoln and rebuild something in the scale of the neighboring Penn Avenue buildings

* Create apartments and new store fronts on Wood Street (I'm assuming that means restoring the existing buidlings that are already there)

* Upgrading the store front buildings in the 800 block of Penn Avenue

It will be interesting to see how many of these projects they actually do. They have been talking about restoring/re-using the train station for decades. Anyway, I agree that it's good news.

The key to this kind of project is to get a few good tenants to sign up for this in advance. Store fronts are fine, if there are stores ready to take them over.

Essentially Wilkinsburg needs its Home Depot to pull an East Liberty. It obviously won't be a big box store, but if they can line up a few tenants to attract people from outside, it may work. Then again, Wilkinsburg doesn't really have its Shadyside to build off of, unless you count Regent Square. I'm hoping it creates something to build off of.

Well, Regent Square has attracted a lot of upper middle class in the last 10 years.

The key will be to attract middle class residents to the neighborhoods adjacent to the distance the commercial district.
