Agree to disagree on that one word, that seems to be taking up some of my day, which to be quite honest, is pretty ridiculous. Please feel free to have the last word. I am sure it will keep you up nights.

This was a fun thread. Such a shame to see it go downhill.

Yeah, grammar seemed to be the finalization of the thread. People pointing out grammatical errors instead of focusing on the real discussion. Thanks lobick.

Hospital workers are a tad too busy to be out "socializing" on their shifts and can't just break away to BS. Cops have their "hangout" spots in their respective areas during their shifts. City Fire shifts are 24 hours at a time; so with exception of the unlucky guy on watch or some that can't sleep, they're passed out in beds at their station. Calls allowing of course. The nature of the EMS shifts in the City mean many are just hanging at the station, "napping", or BSing at a hospital or some other "hangout" spot.

Pittsburgh Police Zone 3, Fire and EMS were in the same building on S 18th Street for many years on the Southside until the cops moved out of that nasty building for another on E Warrington. Southside hospital was only blocks away. There certainly wasn't a 24/7 society built around them. Shift work like the mills, yes. Look at Jacks. One of the very few open at 0700 bars left in the City. 24/7, no.

All of those jobs, and other overnight service jobs don't contribute to a 24/7 society. They exist in every single city around the US. A regional culture does.

I came from a city that is like that. And unfortunately, I don't think Pgh really lends itself to that.
I'm more interested in those establishments giving the impression that the area is 24/7. I'd want stuff that would "keep their lights on" all night and show activity then build from there.

It wasn't grammatical in nature, but at least you now acknowledge your error. You're welcome.

For the record, of course Lobick was right about what I meant.

That said, my guess is that if they hadn't leveled the Lower Hill, both the Lower/Middle Hill and Uptown would have done better than they did in the 70s-90s, and may well have been gentrifying in the 2000s, sort of like the South Side and Lawrenceville, or the more intact parts of the North Side (which, incidentally, all demonstrate that such a track in Pittsburgh was not impossible). But again, we'll never know for sure.

Back in the 1970's, Pittsburgh did have a 24/7 district in the current cultural district. The smut proprietors, massage parlors, newstands, bars, pinball arcades, and a couple of White Tower restaurants kept the area hopping just about 24/7.

The city fathers decided they didn't like it, so they zoned it all out of existance.
