Mercer, a British consulting firm, ranked the world's cities in terms of quality of life. Pittsburgh just made the top 50.

U.S. cities get no love in worldwide quality of living survey | News To Me with George Mathis

Vienna was #1. The Best North American city was Vancouver at #5.

US cities went
Honolulu (29)
San Francisco (30)
Boston (36)
Chicago and Washington, D.C. (tied, along with Madrid, at 43),
New York (47)
Seattle (48)

All of which are the "usual" suspects so for Pittsburgh to do that well despite its poor reputation is pretty good. But I'm surprised that the oft mentioned Portland Oregon didn't make it.

No American city made the list for Personal Safety.

3-way tie for #49, with Kobe and Yokohama.

Chicago, Honolulu, Houston and San Francisco are off the Personal Safety ranking chart, all rank 53. I thought Pittsburgh's safety among American cities was really good. Apparently Chicago, Honolulu, Houston and San Francisco are safer than Pittsburgh? I find that hard to believe.

At another site I speculated that they may be using City crime statistics rather than Metro statistics. Pittsburgh does much better in Metro than City, largely because the City is relatively small in area.

I guess that's including per capita/size for Chi-Town, H-Town, & San Fran, but I can believe that we're more dangerous than Honolulu

The exact method of ranking is a bit mysterious, but Mercer says it ranks living conditions according to 39 factors, including political stability, currency exchange regulations, traffic congestion, availability of food and climate.

Congrats, Pittsburgh.

I find it funny as hell that no US city got a ranking for personal safety.
