my husband and i moved in pittsburgh 8 years ago and we live in squirrel hill. now that we have small kids we are looking for a second house around 1 -1 1/2 hours to buy - possibly north of pittsburgh... but we are from milan (italy) and we don't know where to look.
do you have any suggestion about places to explore? i really would love a waterfront house or a small town on the lake since i spent my childhood on the lake of como and i love lakes but actually also a river would be just fine.

thank you

A river? Pittsburgh has a few of those.

Though neither is north of Pittsburgh, Indian Lake (Pennsylvania) or Deep Creek Lake (Maryland) may be decent options. I've spent a fair amount of time at both, in case you have further questions.

Welcome to the Conneaut Lake Resort Area of Pennsylvania! is north of Pittsburgh and perhaps more of a "town" atmosphere rather than a planned development (since the planned development is old enough )

Or here is a development community NE of Pgh: Welcome to Treasure Lake

I agree with Conneaut Lake. It's probably just over an hour drive from Squirrel Hill. Deep Creek down in Maryland is beautiful with lots of nice homes and things to do. It's probably about a 2 hour drive. You could also check out Cheat Lake in West Virginia, The area around Sandy Lake, PA in Mercer County, and Tappan Lake in Harrison County, OH. http://consumer.discoverohio.com/sea...x?detail=44043

North of Pittsburgh are Sandy Lake, with the adjacent towns of Stoneboro and Sandy Lake (the Twin Cities)! As mentioned, Conneaut Lake is popular for second homes, and Edinboro Lake in Erie County. I know that almost all the families at Sandy Lake have been going there for generations, so there is usually nothing available.

There's always Lake Milton/Craig Beach in Ohio, which is probably your best bet. http://www.homes.com/Real_Estate/OH/City/LAKE%20MILTON/

I live a short walk away from Mosquito Lake which is located north of Youngstown. Most of the areas surrounding Mosquito Lake are wooded or somewhat rural, with Cortland being the largest actual town (pop app. 6500). Here's a small photo-tour that i did last year. Cortland photo tour #2 It's hard to find a home right on the lake, as a large portion of the land surrounding the lake is a state park, but you might be able to find something within walking/driving distance.

In the Greensburg area, there's an upscale housing community called Lago de Vita, which surrounds a vast lake. It's located about an hour southeast of the city in western Westmoreland County. Several houses located in the community comes with a lakefront view. There's also recreational opportunities such as boating and fishing if that's your thing. It's located near all the amenities and lies within the Hempfield Area School District, which is one of the better districts in the area.

I can't believe people are recommending Sandy Lake. That is mainly a fishing lake in the middle of nowhere. I don't think that is what she has in mind.
