Scattered among the other conifers in the Elkhorn Mountains in Northeast Oregon, the not so wet side of the state, are the Tamarack trees. They are deciduous conifers . Yes, there is such a thing.
In October the chlorophyll in the Tamarack's needles breaks down and they turn from green to brilliant gold. In November the needles fall off and in the spring they grow back.

The cottonwoods along the Rio Grande were gorgeous yesterday when driving from Las Cruces to Albuquerque. These are pictures from the Jemez canyon (Jemez Mountains north of Albuquerque).
