Some really nice pictures in this thread. I just received my new Canon 5D mark III the other day and cant wait to get out with my macro lens to take some bug photos.

bugs are my favorite things to photograph. my wife is a flower person but i love creepy crawly stuff or anything that flys.

Mathjak, those are outstanding. You must be shooting with the MP-E 65. Not many other lenses can give you the results of what you have there.

it is a nikon d800 , nikon 105vr macro lens with extension tubes.

lighting is always handled the same.

a big nikon sb910 on the camera and 2- nikon r1c1 macro flashes mounted on the lens.

being able to control how dark or light the background is even at noon is a big plus.

the flashes are far faster than the camera so they freeze motion too. all are hadheld and pretty small apertures.

Up-close photos (as others have showcased so incredibly in this thread) are beyond my ability,
but this iridescent green beetle (which I saw on sidewalk yesterday) was so pretty I had to snap a pic
