I started selling photos on some stock sites. I found one of my photos on a commercial travel website today. What's the best way to find out if they purchased it or pilfered it?

It's been a while but I think I remember reading something in the stock contract that contributors were not to contact buyers.

if you put the photo up on a legit stock site you should have received confirmation and monetary rec't for the photo stating type of purchase for use, amount and photo number.
contact the commercial travel site webmaster and identify who you are and when they purchased the photo as you have no confirmation of purchase.

I'll try contacting the webmaster. I have received information on the purchase but it doesn't say who purchased it. I've sold 4 copies on two different websites and they were editorials as I didn't have a release. I had wondered how they were being used. I didn't think they could be used this way as an editorial but I still don't know a lot about it.

This is the photo on their site.

That's editorial - they have lots of ads on the page, but at it's heart the page is an article about cliff jumping in Acapulco, and your image is used to illustrate the article - definitely editorial.

Carolyn E. Wright has a really good (and short) article on the difference between editorial and commercial usage, especially as it applies where there is a person in the photo - so exactly what you're dealing with!

Thanks bouncethelight. I'll check out the article. I'm not real concerned about it and actually it's nice to see one of my photos being used like this. Just hope they paid for it. I'm not the best at keeping my photos private and have posted this one a couple of different places. Hopefully I made my 40 cents from it!

If it from one of those royalty free stock sites all you'll get by checking yourself that your image has been sold. Some sites have a comment section for buyers which might tell who bought it. The buyer pays maybe $5 for the image they have no interest in being bothered by the photogs. It's all a matter of numbers. Once you have acrued $100(for most sites) you can request payment. If it a reputable site you will have no problem getting paid.

I found out they purchased it from one of the stock sites I post on. It's all good. I'm just surprised to have stumbled up it.

Yup, I saw that, pretty amazing for sure. You probably know that you can go to the Contributor/Photog section of the site and keep track of your earnings and sales. Keep submitting and before long your making some nice extra money. Good Luck.

Thanks B! There was a nifty thread going earlier this year or last about stock sites. I'm sure it's deep in the bowels of the photo forum now.
