Murrells Inlet, a natural harbor along the coast of SC, served as a hideout for a number of pirates, including Edward Teach, better known as "Blackbeard". Local Legend holds that, after burying a large treasure booty, a pirate was left behind to guard the spot, along with an ample supply of rum. When Blackbeard returned several years later, he found the pirate's skeleton leaning against a tree, with 32 empty casks of rum and a missing treasure. This tree is one of several in the area that local guides point out as being "Drunken Jack's tree."
NGC 2683 is a spiral galaxy discovered by William Herschel on February 5, 1788. It was nicknamed the "UFO Galaxy" by the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory. It is viewed nearly edge-on from Earth's location in space and is located between 16 to 25 million light-years away. It is receding from Earth at 410 km/s (250 mi/s), and from the Galactic Center at 375 km/s (233 mi/s). Note the many faint fuzzies in the image, all of which are distant galaxies.
