My husband's employer has been asking him about transferring to Phoenix. The company is on East Chambers, in the 85040 zip code. I've been reading some posts here and have seen generally good comments about Chandler and Gilbert, which seem pretty close to where he'd be working. I am self-employed and work at home, so location doesn't mean much to me as far as commuting time; he'd be okay with a commute of up to 30 minutes. We'd likely rent before buying to make sure we liked the area. We currently pay $1045 a month in rent, but we'd like to drop that a bit if we could -- could we get a decent place for $800 or so?

Any other suggestions beyond Chandler and Gilbert? We currently live in a suburb of Minneapolis and enjoy sports events, theater and concerts, movies, restaurants -- all the usual. No kids (yet).

Thanks very much in advance.

$800 isn't much for rent out here, except for very outer areas, but you might get lucky. The typical rent that I see is $1000-1200+. You can get a nice 1 bedroom apt for $800.

that price range is a little light - but you could find places in most of the east valley that should be nice while having easy access to theater in mesa, asu & downtown along with downtown sporting events, etc

football, hockey and larger concerts for the most part live on the west valley, but it's real easy access

i lived in mpls for a year - you'll find a lot of other MN transplants here
