Why gated community?

Some of the folks here seem to be making the assumption that all properties governed by HOAs have gates. They do not. A gated community (be it an automatic gate or a guarded gate) needs an HOA or someone has to collect the money to pay for the that service that benefits the entire community. But many communities that have HOAs are NOT gated. I live in one. Our HOA costs a minimal amount and the money goes mostly to desert-appropriate landscaping in common areas, lighting at our entrances, caring for our sidewalks, community playground, and picnic area, and street cleaning.

And, this thread is about gated communities (all of which have HOAs), not HOAs generally. There are plenty of threads already about HOAs generally. Please keep this thread to a discussion of gated communities, the pros and cons of those, etc.
