My 25 yo son and his friends just rented a house built in 1956, the ad for which lists the Cooling as "Central, Other". The house has forced air for heating. My son insists that it's central air but I see a swamp cooler on the roof in the pictures. Are there any houses that have dual systems? I'd thought I'd read about them a couple of years ago but don't see anything when I Google now.

Not that it matters - I'm not going to be living there.

Thanks very much.

My home from the 70s has both. You'll be hard pressed to find both unless they are from a certain time frame... mid-centuries used to have swamp coolers and moved to central air, but might still have the swamp cooler. The swamp cooler may not be functioning though, most people aren't fond of swamp coolers, and they don't work in July. A rare few (like myself) prefer swampy.

All new homes are central air only.

Yes. In fact, they outnumber those that have only swamp coolers based on my experience.

My house was built in 1983. It had central air but no swampy. I am also one of the few that prefer an evap cooler so I installed one and it works to perfection most of the time.
I'll always have both A/C and an evap cooler in any house I own.

Yes, it's quite common and a good way to save money during the drier months versus using the a/c only. Our house was built in the 70's and had both as well, we've since replaced the system with a new more efficient one, now it is A/C only.

Swamp coolers work really well in dry climates but once monsoon season ramps up here they're not very effective. I've also heard that there is a smaller band for how much they'll cool the air, although I never used one long enough to test the theory in person. If it works he may want to consider using it up until late June or so as it should save money over the a/c.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I've also heard since I posted about houses that have converted from swamp coolers to A/C and mound the A/C on the roof.

Oh well, not a big deal either way as *I* won't be living there. Such a good mother...

Thanks again.

My house has both, a Master cool evap cooler and a air conditioner. I run the evap most of the time and only use the AC for monsoon season
