I was driving down Power Rd this weekend and noticed a terrible smell as soon as I was south of Guadalupe Rd all the way to the 202. What is that smell? It's really unpleasant. Is it something they put on the crops in that area? It's foul!

Huge dairy farm over there. Maybe that's what you smelled?

Maybe. Not sure what a dairy farm would smell like. I mean, the smell wasn't like spoiled milk. It reminded me of the smell of a swamp.

A dairy farm won't smell like milk. It will smell like livestock. Feed, manure, etc. Hog farms are the worst!

yeah with the cloudiness the past few days, the smell lingers and travels more. It's not pretty.

Some days you can smell it all the way up where I work at Power/Baseline... It's the animal farms down south.

Is it normal for animal farms to smell like that? It's not an indication that animals are living in less than desirable conditions?

yes, feed lots stink....and that is normal.....and animals being raised for human consumption have lived in less-than-desirable (for the animal) conditions for millennia....

They smell bad when the air is not dry.

Dear zathras, did you really think cows are in green pastures with like 10 acres a cow, like on the bill boards?

BTW, those pictures for the CA dairy industry are taken in New Zealand.

feedlots are required to contain the animal waste....you can see the waste in this not-too-crowded-at-all lot......
