Do the exchange at a DMV where you can know the title is free and clear before you hand over any cashola.

I just sold a car to another person and we met at the mechanic who did an inspection on the car and then I followed him to his bank and witnessed the cashiers check being purchased and had the bill of sale and title notarized at the bank. The only sticky point was he didn't have a temporary tag to drive the car to the MVD office and register it so I left the plate on the car so he wouldn't get pulled over. He returned the plate to me once he registered the car the next day.

Worked out great but he should have brought a temporary tag with him which would have made the transaction perfect.

OP, as in buying a car, or buying a car in AZ?

Theres title places all over the city. They dont charge much, its less than $20 and think of it as a convenience fee for not spending the majority of your day at the DMV. You can buy a temp tag with the vin before that day (3 or 30 days, if the registration is expired) or if youd like you can take care of transfering the title right then and there.

If you meant buying a car; then have a mechanic do a PPI (pre-purchase inspection). Do your research and see if its worth it. Everytime Ive bought a car I just take cash, but I make sure to do it at public place. Find out before hand if they are willing to leave the plates or do what you need to do to be legal and not risk that day or two where you may get screwed stupidly, (that includes insurance). Get a carfax report

If you goto the MVD they give you the plate on the spot, not sure about the private places. If time is limited you may want to suck it up and go to the actual MVD and get the plate. That is unless someone here says the private places give out plates on the spot.

As long as you have a valid temp tag you can drive anywhere.
