I'm trying gradually to start riding my mountain bike again and have a question about good places to ride offroad but not necessarily up or down the side of a huge, steep, scary mountain. I'm not looking for a bike path either. I'm originally from Ohio so this actually Mountain Biking thing is new, I'm used to mud and roots and smaller hills. Maybe a beginner hill or course? Thanks.

Biking really isn't my thing (thanks to the world's most dangerous road in Bolivia!), but it seems that South Mountain Park has some nice, easy bike paths that go around the base of the foothills; if I recall correctly, it's a little up and down but certainly not strenuous. Hopefully others will pipe in who have more experience.

Start with riding the fire road on South Mountain. The trailhead is on the 48th Street entrance to the park. Once you're comfortable on there try out the Desert Classic trail. It has some hills but nothing major. Dessert Classic for the most part is flat...no steep climbs or drops. Just take it easy the first time on any trail.

McDowell Mountain park near Fountain Hills has a nice trail that's long, but very flat for beginners. I think it's called Pemberton. It's a 16 mile loop. You need to pay an admission to the park. It's well worth it. If you go there and come up upon a horse (horseback riding is allowed there) please stop and get off your bike and wait until the rider passes. Horses get spooked by bicycles. It's not only the proper etiquette, but prevents injuries and even lives.

Good beginner trails:

Desert Classic - South Mountain
Trail 100 - from 7th Ave to 7th St
Papago Park
Pemberton Trail - McDowell Mountain Preserve (this is a very long loop, but technically easy, MMP also has some great race loops that don't have huge drops or anything)

As your skills improve, you'll find so many great trails out here. Hit me up if you'd ever like someone to ride with or show you some good loops, beginner or otherwise.

Check out MeetUp.com.

Last time I checked, there were a couple different mountain bike groups on there. Even if you don't want to ride with them, you might be able to see where they ride and any info they post about the trails.

How big is the racing scene? I used to race when I lived in California, then quit when I moved to New Jersey. I'm kind of interested in starting up again.
