I recently moved into a new house and am interested in planting some deciduous trees in my front yard - I have a grass yard with a sprinkler system so it should get plenty of water. I'm looking for a good looking and somewhat fast growing tree that will provide shade for the sidewalk and home.

Any suggestions for trees that will thrive in Phoenix's hot hot summers?

Note to mods: I am looking for specific Phoenix horticulture information. Since Phoenix has a uniquely hot desert climate I think this forum will yield the best results. Please do not move this thread.

It's perfectly appropriate for the Phoenix forum to ask about trees that grow well here.

My sister's former neighbors had some really nice trees in their yard that did grow fast to a really nice size, pretty shape. If memory served, they were shamel ash.

Japanese elm are pretty, too. Not as fast growing, to my mind.

My favorite is the sissoo (Indian Rosewood) tree. Grows like a weed, tolerates heat, cold drought and lousy soil and provides great shade. It drops its leaves in the spring pretty much simultaneously when the new ones come out. It can get fairly large in diameter and has tendency to grow leaning to a side unless you keep it staked for a couple years.

Does anyone know what kind of trees have the smooth white bark and smallish green leaves? I see them a lot in Phoenix by sidewalks and by streets. They seem to provide a lot of shade.

These are young and leafless, picture taken in the winter.
Are you speaking of these?

Sounds like a sissoo. They have gray white trunks. They are popular as a streetscape tree and are extremely common along the streets in newer areas of the city. There are hundreds of them along the arterials in Goodyear.

AZ Bound - That bark doesn't look smooth from the pic but it's hard to tell.

Ponderosa - I think you nailed it. Looks like I'm going Sissoo (Rosewood) shopping Do they lose their leaves in the winter?

Here is a pic I found:

Personally I like the Fan-Tex Ash trees. They are known to grow fast and the leaves are a great shade of green. They turn a really nice yellow in late winter but are bare for only a month or so before they get leaves again.

They are very popular and seem to be getting more popular. The downtown Civic Space Park is full of them.

Sissio by the way is no deciduous from what I'm reading, it keeps it's leaves all year long.

Thanks HX_Guy - I'll look into the Ash also. There was a pretty negative comment about the Sissoo Tree under this AZCentral article:

Water sissoo weekly in hot weather
