I moved to Utah from the East Coast late last year after being layed off. This site was very helpful for me to learn more about the SLC area, and "ideal" places for me to live (or, "undesireable" places to stay away from). Now it looks like I will be taking a job transfer to Chandler, AZ, and I'm back on this site asking the same questions. I haven't poked around yet, so I'm sure my answers are in here somewhere. But...I'm 42, divorced, no kids, kind of in gypsy mode with ths economy but looking for long-term. My ideal place to live is a relatively quiet and safe community, not necessarily in Chandler but it'd be ok. Where don't I want to live? I'll be renting at first, whether it's in an apartment or condo/townhouse...

Chandler is as nice as any place in the Valley and will be great for your commute. You could also look in South Tempe or Gilbert. You will have numerous choices in these areas and Im sure you will love it. We are renting in Chandler and just purchased a home in North Peoria (other side of the earth from Chandler). We have been here for only two months but love it. We moved from the Midwest and have lived in every corner of the US and found that people are people and as long as you have an open mind and leave your previous location behind, you will find happiness wherever you choose to live.

As far as where not to live, just go out and find some place that feels right. You will know by looking around and seeing whats going on and the people around. Then, when you find that place, come to CD and ask if anyone has a reason not to live there. This will validate your choice and you will be good to go.

Welcome to the Valley!

You are absolutely right: "...people are people and as long as you have an open mind and leave your previous location behind, you will find happiness wherever you choose to live." Thanks for your time 'apexin', I have a few months before I make the move so I'll have time to research and visit the area, and I'll keep your input in mind.

What type of community are you hoping to find, other than nice, quite, apartment, condo, etc?

Are you looking for urban, close to transit (light rail, park-n-ride), near museums, do you want streets you can walk like Mill Ave, Scottsdale Rd, Central Avenue or are you content with merely suburban outposts?

For now, just a nice place to live; once I get a lay of the land then I can find a more permanent area. Not urban, but not in the city of Phoenix either. I will be commuting to work by car. Any museums or places like that, I don't mind driving to; I don't have to live near them. I am not familiar with the streets you mentioned, but I like the idea of walkable streets; again, I don't need to live near them. Suburban apt/condo living will work for me for the first 6-12 months.

Chandler works well for you, then. You can always drive to Mill. It is right by ASU, so more college crowd, but cool. I go there when I need to then leave. Sometimes I go just to hop onthe light rail and go wherever from that spot.

Chandler is about 15 minutes from the airport.

Ahwatukee is good, too. Officially it is Phoenix, but really it is just a block over on many sides from Tempe, Chandler. If there were no signs you wouldn't know the difference.
