I am handicapped and middle age, wanting to relocate to either Baltimore or Philadelphia.
I’d need to find a job and use public handicapped transportation.
Which city would you say is better?

SEPTA's bus fleet is mostly low-floor and those buses that aren't will be phased it in the next 2-3 years. They all have wheel chair lifts and ramps.

Most el stations and some subway stations have elevators - that's still a work in progress.

There's also the CCT service, which is a dial-a-ride service that will take you from point-to-point within the service area. It's more expensive than taking the bus or train but obviously a lot quicker.

I can't comment on the service on MTA in Baltimore. I don't know much about it.

I used to work for a company that coordinated transportation for people with mobility issues. If the SEPTA options mentioned earlier aren't convenient or available, this could be another consideration.

Of course, like everyone else, your choice of career may be important too. What are you looking to do here?

I'd also post your questions on the Baltimore forum as well. While the two cities have some similiarities IMO the locals over there can tell you about the differences.

a thought on another note
i think baltimore can be fun and is more upcoming. they tried back in the late 80's, but i think now its actually happening foreal foreal. philly is more stagnant, yet grounded

I went to Baltimore for the Eagles game a couple of weeks ago and was amazed by how nice and fun the city was. Around the stadium they have food stands set up by local restaurants, serve all kinds of domestic and imported beer, cocktails, even a Bloody Mary bar! And it was pretty cheap too. I just kept saying "there is no way this would fly in Philly - all the drunks would ruin it".

I would definitely relocate to Baltimore over Philly because it is so fun and friendly there and the nice parts of the city were so much nicer than Philly...

I actually wish that Philly had located one of its newer stadiums closer to Center City to create more downtown synergy (and sales) but of course we ended up with both of them remaining way down in South Philly.

To me, Bmore is a lot like Philly in with its longtime residents and working-class roots. I do think our downtown has more to offer than theirs while Baltimore's waterfront area is definitely superior to ours. The more challenged areas in each city have issues with crime although I don't know the numbers to quantify which is "better" or "worse'.

I think Baltimore's biggest challenge is in creating more jobs in its area. Many locals commute down to DC for jobs and priced-out Washington residents looking for an urban alternative end up there. Philly and NYC have a similar connection but not as strong.

I guess you've never been to a Phillies game.

I like Baltimore a lot but I think the nice parts there are pretty much the same as the nice parts here, except that our nice parts are far larger. Philly, despite having a large poor population also has a large middle-class population. Baltimore is sorely missing that middle.

Yes. Actually, i would've been fine with football staying in South Philly. They play 8 or 9 home games a season so it's really not a big deal. But baseball should've been somewhere in or near Center City with regional rail connections and same thing with basketball/hockey.
