Im a drape maker in Florida. Most people here use blinds and shades. I've research georgia but the economy there is not good. Is philadelphia and Washington DC small business friendly. Do people there use drapes and curtains. How is the cost of living? Other cities recommend welcome.

Philly's probably the best city to start a small business in, definitely better for it than DC.

Philly is more of a boutique/small business city. You should know that. Every neighborhood has small shops/restaurants and the ones that don't did originally. DC is much smaller in area and they keep gentrifying and sterilizing it. Plus, the cost of living is MUCH higher in DC.

It's easier to start up small businesses in Philly is what UDResident is saying. Especially with all the new tax breaks small start up businesses are getting now in the city.

To the OP. Yes, start a businesses in Philly, especially in Center City where you can market your product to everyone living in highrises. There are tons of tax breaks now that small businesses can get for starting up in Philadelphia.

I see you've posted similar threads in different forums albeit not yet in Washington DC. I would suggest you post on the Washington DC thread for more specific answers about that city. As the cities are approximately 150 miles apart, not everyone will have knowledge of both cities.

If you go to www.realtor.com and plug in the name of some upscale suburbs, (from the map) and look at the window treatments in houses for sale, I think you will see quite a few use valences and draperys, but mostly ready made because of the cost of custom is so high.

I am very skeptical about the drapery business here in Philly.

Our once impressive Fabric and Drapery District along 4th Street in South Philly is not only dying, but not even a shadow of it's former self. When I had some custom made curtains made about two years ago, the elderly owner of the shop bemoaned the fact the district would be gone in a few years ... his prediction is coming true.

Remember Stapler's Fabrics near City Hall that went out of business about 5 years ago? It was a Philly institution for something like 100 years!

Why is that? I asked.

Most people, in these economic times, just buy ready made curtains from the big stores whether Loews, Home Depot, J.C. Penney, Sears, etc. was his reply.

My work is not very cheap and at the same time, I wouldn't charge customers an arm and leg. My prices is suitable for all income level. I offer custom and ready made soft furnishings. My collection of work range from valance, curtains, drapes, pillows to match for contemporary or traditional with a slight modern twist. And some upholstery. I just wonder if my work is suitable in this demographic area.
