You're between that well-known rock and a hard place. It may come done to deciding which of these options is the less onerous. If you end up staying in DE, as I said, Wilmington isn't great, but for someone your age and with your interest, it offers a lot more than Newark. On the other hand, if you know someone in Philly, maybe you could stay with them for a week and "practice" commuting and see how you like it. Also, carpooling might make the journey less tedious and expensive.

Long-range, any chance you might be open to pursuing other employment? If so, then any city that fits the bill might be open to you, provided you could land a job there. At least you could feel there is some hope on the horizon as you undertake your job search.

Best of luck!

Sorry to hijack OP, but I'm facing a similar dilemma. Does anyone have a feel for what a commute from the Swarthmore area to Newark would be like?

Seems upside down tax wise, paying Philly wage tax to work in Delaware?

^^ Spouse will be working in Center City and we're trying to find someplace with a reasonable commute for both of us.

I'm assuming you haven't nailed down a place yet? If you haven't then you could live in Ridley Park. It's right on the Wilmington/Newark line but also close to Center City. Close enough to drive in fact. Ridley Park to 30th Street Station is roughly a half hour by train according to the schedule. SEPTA | Wilmington/Newark Line Regional Rail Schedule | Weekday | to Center City Philadelphia Actually, looking at the same schedule only to Wilmington/Newark, it's less than an hour to Newark from Ridley Park as well.

This is something anybody thinking about moving to the area should have handy: SEPTA | Clickable Regional Rail & Rail Transit Map

My dad commuted from Havertown to Bear, DE for about a year. The commute was bad enough that we decided to move.
