Philadelphia is no different from other industrial powerhouses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including more currently prosperous cities like New York and Boston.

Just as those cities made a dramatic transition into a service and knowledge economy, so has Philadelphia. Although the benefits for Philadelphia continue to be a work in progress, you can't ignore the positive trajectory of the city.

The scars of being a post-industrial city certainly remain for Philadelphia in many areas, but they're not destined to be there for eternity. As everything else in life, the only constant is change. Just as heavy industry overtook the city, it too can and will be reclaimed for nature and/or other modern uses.

Do you know what the state budget impasse has to do with the start date for SLS construction? We've been looking at that hole in the ground for a while now.

Thx

My guess would be incentives. They get worked into state budgets. No budget, no incentives.

I'm looking forward to the completion of the bike/hike trail that will make Bartram's Garden less of a hidden gem for many Philadelphians.

That's the only thing I can think of as well. Still, it seems odd. Unless he has a cash flow problem, it's not as if he's dug a big hole in the center of S Broad just on speculation that he might put a tall building there one day. Guess we'll see.

Speaking of S Broad, work has begun to dismantle the parking garage eyesore in the 200 block. In two short years, there will be a remarkable number of people pacing the sidewalks of S Broad with all the hotel, condo and apartment projects underway.

Based on several things that I've seen since the Republicans took over Raleigh, agreement or not, I wouldn't trust the Republicans in Harrisburg with an incentive until it's enshrined in a budget. I'd walk away from a hole & move on to either something with a guarantee of an incentive or something that doesn't involve an incentive.

I never would have thought incentive before, but that's the first thing that came to my mind now, given that there's a tie-in to the budget. It has to be an incentive.

Dranoff has a good track record wrt projects so, hopefully, it will get worked out.

That garage is another one of the late Sam Rappaport's delapidated holdings.

SLS was delayed at first because it was discovered they had to rework the foundation of the building. It was delayed this second time because it recieved funding from the state to do the project. With no budget, however, they don't have access to those funds.

Given that Wolf just vetoed the "garbage"(his word)partial budget, the saga continues.

I have no doubt that Dranoff will complete this project. That said, it must be a pretty significant sum of money from Harrisburg if the completion of this project depends on the whims of legislators from Erie, Scranton, Renovo and elsewhere. In the meantime, he owns a taxable hole in the ground.
